Azure Cost Management: No More Lag or Retail-Only Pricing
Cost Management lags and CSP shows retail only; exports need a DIY Power BI report — and it’s Azure-only. Mof unifies Azure with your other clouds in one read-only table: real payable, allocation, alerts and Excel export.

Exports are snapshots, not real-time; Power BI has row limits and you build the report
Mof · one read-only key
Works out of the box — no SQL, no extra query fees
Why teams use Mof to manage Azure cost
Plenty of teams run VMs, storage, SQL Database and AKS on Azure and read the bill either in Cost Management or by exporting to storage and pulling reports in Power BI. Once resources span subscriptions and management groups — and you also run other clouds — “why did this month cost more?” and “which team owns this?” take several places to answer.
Mof is a FinOps platform for teams running more than one cloud — AWS, Azure and GCP alongside Alibaba, Tencent and other clouds most tools can’t reach. It connects to Azure read-only, then layers on real payable, the Resource Center, cost allocation and real-time alerts — all in one view.
Three ways to read your Azure bill — each with a catch
Cost Management, Exports + Power BI, invoices — each solves a piece, and each leaves a gap.
- Data lagsUsually 8–24h behind — no real-time
- CSP sees retail onlyReseller subscriptions can’t see the real invoice price
- No real-time alertsBudget alerts are separate and basic
- Azure-onlyYou organize across subscriptions / management groups yourself
- SnapshotsExported to storage, not real-time
- Row limitsPower BI struggles past a million rows and times out
- You build reportsAssemble and maintain refreshes in Power BI yourself
- API times outUsage Details is large; paging times out
- Monthly totals onlyNo drill-down to resources
- Retail pricingCSP won’t match what you pay the reseller
- Static billNo trends, allocation, or alerts
How Mof solves these
Connect read-only, unify Azure with your other clouds, and fill in real payable, Resource Center, allocation and alerts.
Azure native vs Mof
| Dimension | Azure native | Mof |
|---|---|---|
| Data latency | Cost Management usually 8–24h | Synced, near real-time |
| Detail / drill-down | Export to storage + Power BI | Detailed dashboard on connect |
| Report building | Build / maintain in Power BI | Works out of the box, for finance & teams |
| Data scale | Power BI strains past 1M rows | No row limit in the dashboard |
| Real payable | CSP sees retail only | Custom discounts → real payable |
| Multi-sub / cloud | Azure-only | Many subscriptions + multi-cloud in one table |
| Alerts | No Slack / email / IM push | Real-time alerts to Slack, email & IM |
| Resource + usage + cost | Split across Cost Management / Monitor / Advisor | Resource Center: inventory + P95 + payable + waste, cross-cloud |
| Allocation / tags | Native tags only | Showback + virtual tags, Excel export |
| Anomaly detection | Basic | Holt-Winters real-time alerts |
Azure cost management FAQ
How is Mof different from Azure Cost Management and Exports?
The Cost Management portal is usually 8–24h behind and fairly coarse; going deeper means exporting to storage and building a Power BI report yourself, with a million-row performance ceiling. Mof connects read-only and gives you a detailed dashboard — no report to build, no row limit — then adds real payable (custom discounts), the Resource Center, cost allocation and alerts, and puts your other clouds in the same view.
For Azure bought through a reseller (CSP), can Mof show the real payable?
Yes. Under CSP, customers see retail rates in Cost Management, not what you pay the reseller. Mof supports custom discounts to convert retail into your real payable, and clearly shows billed, discount, saved and payable.
How does Mof connect to Azure billing data? Is it safe?
Through an Azure AD service principal with read-only permissions (or Exports per our docs). Mof reads billing and resources only — it needs no write access and changes nothing in your Azure environment.
Which Azure services does it cover? Does it support tag-based allocation?
VMs, storage, SQL Database, AKS, App Service, bandwidth and other major line items sync automatically. Allocation reuses your Azure tags and subscription / management-group structure, and untagged shared resources can be split by ratio or custom rules.
Does Mof’s data lag too?
Mof syncs billing promptly — no waiting 8–24h like Cost Management — and adds real-time budget and anomaly alerts that notify the right people the moment you overspend.
